Associates: Based in Washington, DC, James & Hoffman welcomes applications from candidates interested in joining our firm’s dynamic practice representing workers and their unions.

The firm’s work involves defending and enforcing a broad spectrum of employee and civil rights, including organizing, collective bargaining, equal treatment, fair wages and hours, and contract enforcement. We frequently litigate complex cases and class actions in trial and appellate courts, in arbitration, and before administrative agencies.

Associates at the firm are given substantial responsibility, and the opportunity to contribute to the firm’s work in meaningful ways. They are often asked to complete substantive litigation tasks, including drafting court filings, interacting with clients and opposing counsel, representing clients in arbitration, and making court arguments. They also participate in advising our union clients on internal matters, such as collective bargaining and union governance.

Candidates should display a commitment to advancing the needs of working people, strong writing ability, and a desire to litigate complex legal matters. Candidates should have at least one year of post-JD work experience. This position is not suitable for current law students.

Salary is dependent on experience, and ranges from $95,000 – $135,000 We also offer a competitive benefits package.

James & Hoffman offers summer positions to second-year law students as well as third-year students going on to judicial clerkships. Summer Associates can expect to take on a variety of responsibilities dictated by our ongoing litigation needs, frequently encompassing research and writing for various phases of trial and appellate litigation, as well as administrative actions and arbitration. When possible, summer associates are given opportunities to attend client intake sessions, depositions, arbitrations, and court appearances, as well as meetings and events in the Washington, D.C. area labor community. Applicants should have superior academic records; excellent writing, research and oral communication skills; strong work references; and a demonstrated interest in labor and employment law.
