James & Hoffman cultivates the highest standards of quality and professionalism in our legal representation. Our litigation practice is demanding and diverse, and our firm’s collegial work environment gives even newer associates substantial responsibility for evaluation, development and management of cases and projects, as well as day-to-day involvement with clients. In contrast to the way many firms operate, progression to membership at James & Hoffman does not involve a competition among associates. Rather, each associate is evaluated on his or her merits, against the high standards to which we hold ourselves.

We welcome inquiries from strong candidates with outstanding academic background and writing ability, keen analytical skills and solid legal judgment, who consistently demand excellence in their work and enjoy taking initiative. While law journal experience and judicial clerkships are not absolute requirements, they are valuable indices of the kinds of skills we look for in an associate. As an equal opportunity employer, James & Hoffman is committed to diversity. Please mail or e-mail us your resume, your law school transcript and one or two writing samples. Although we hire as needs arise, rather than by annual schedule, our attorneys respond on an ongoing basis to questions about our practice, in particular, and the broader field of labor and employment law.

Summer Associates: James & Hoffman offers summer positions to second-year law students as well as third-year students going on to judicial clerkships. Summer associates can expect to work with all or most of the James & Hoffman attorneys, handling a variety of responsibilities dictated by our ongoing litigation needs. When possible, summer associates are given opportunities to attend client intake sessions, depositions, arbitrations and court appearances, as well as meetings and events in the Washington, D.C. area labor community. Applicants should have superior academic records, excellent writing, research and oral communication skills, strong work references and a demonstrated interest in labor and employment law. As indicated above, journal experience is welcome, though not essential. Please send resume and writing sample to Emilie Kraft.
